Top Modern Day Non-Surgical and Cosmetic Beauty Treatments
Surgical and non-surgical treatments seem to now be part of our everyday lives. Not so long ago, anyone have anything done was seen as a taboo and kept quiet. Today we are more open about what we have done. Procedures that give no down-time, are less invasive and quicker to perform – are all on the up – so here’s a quick guide to the most popular treatments that keep us looking more youthful and beautiful!

BOTOX AND FILLERS
Many people (especially men!) confuse dermal fillers with neurotoxins like Botox. Botox paralyses muscles to reduce wrinkles, while fillers smooth out skin by plumping out wrinkles.
Let’s start with fillers… Collagen used to be a common filler, but more modern-day fillers such as Restylane and Juvéderm, use hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is able to store water and is responsible for giving skin a plump, hydrated look. It’s used topically to moisturize, but a cream or serum can’t restore lost volume as it can’t penetrate the skin deep enough; only injectable hyaluronic acid can. Once injected, hyaluronic acid can add to the natural plumping action, or replenish your body’s natural production of hyaluronic acid, which reduces as you age.
Having fillers can last a long time 1-3 years) and really make you look more youthful. But be sure to find the right nurse or technician as if done badly, you can get the duck pout or hamster cheeks be careful! These days the nurse can use a canula to inject deep in the cheeks – this can help pull your skin by plumping to reduce under eye bags and smile lines in one go. It rally is an art for the person doing it, so choose carefully and find someone recommended by someone who has already had experience with them. Worst case scenario, if it goes wrong, it is possible to inject an enzyme to dissolve the product.
As stated above, Botox or alternatives freeze facial muscles to stop wrinkles appearing in the common places (smile or frown lines). This does mean you may not ever be able to look angry, but that’s not a bad thing is it?? You can have “Baby Botox” to only partially paralyse the muscles, so you can still move your face more naturally, but it will still soften any wrinkles. Botox tends to last 3-6 months and will vary depending on the amount used and the brand used. It normally takes a week to kick in after having the injections. If Botox goes wrong, you can normally adjust it again if you can back to your nurse. Botox really knocks some years off your face for sure.
Non-surgical nose job
The Non-Surgical 10-minute nose job (or rhinoplasty), is a simple no down time technique to change the shape of your nose. The nurse will inject a precise amount of a filler substance (such as Restylane, Perlane, or Radiesse) in your nose to smooth a bump, dents, deviations, raise the tip of your nose, or make it more symmetric. The before-and-after photos are so unbelievable that you might just think the “lunchtime nose job” is too good to be true. But the results of this can really be quite astonishing! Given how expensive a surgical nose job is (normally around £4,500 in the UK), this really is a no-brainer for some people with a much lower budget (costs normally around £1,000). The only downside is that it isn’t permanent and you will need a top up usually in 2-3 years.
Brazilian Butt Lift
It was probably the Kardashians that got this craze going, but this is a very popular treatment for those who want a perkier, smoother bottom.
A non-surgical butt lift is NOT a substitute for butt implants or fat grafting. It is meant for someone who wants a subtle lift, improvement of the texture on the bottom area, some contouring, cellulite reduction, and a modest volume increase. The treatment works by using a combination of technologies, namely radiofrequency, ultrasound cavitation, vacuum, laser lipo.
Ultrasound cavitation – to stimulate your own body’s collagen and breaks down stubborn fat. It can also help address dimpling or irregularities on the buttock and thigh areas. It converts fat cells into liquids that are drained by the body’s own natural filtration system
Ultrasound cavitation causes an emulsification of fat, converting it into a substance that is eliminated through the urinary and lymphatic systems.
Radiofrequency – notoriously good for skin tightening and lifting for both face and body. Stimulates collagen, elastin & hyaluronic acid. Natural production of collagen & elastin stops as we get older. The heat of the Radio Frequency treatment stimulates cells in the connective tissues causing the body to reproduce collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid that has depleted over the years. Radiofrequency results are often instant but continues to work for weeks after the treatment as the skin heals itself and produces more collagen.
Laser Lipo – some treatments combine a laser lipo light in to one of the treatment heads (see www.nonsurgicalbuttlift.com). The laser lipo suction technique uses laser light to break up fat before its removal from the body.
Vacuum – this is essentially a very strong massage to stimulate the area just treated to increase blood flow to the area to take away the toxins and broken-down fat. Vacuum on it’s own is well-known to help reduce cellulite. It stimulates the lymphatic system and aids the removal of waste products draining lymph from the tissues, improving the colour and appearance of the skin.
Patients who opt for a bum lift usually do not want or are not great candidates for surgery, or do not have enough fat to do a fat transfer. Realistic expectations should be for modest volume increase over time. Those who want more volume can opt for more sessions, but unlike what is advertised in popular media—it can never quite achieve the same volume augmentation as fat transfer.
A single body part treatment lasts 20–30 minutes. 2-3 days must be left between each session for the body to eliminate the fat.
A Butt Lift typically requires a series of at least 3 treatments spaced about 3-6 weeks apart. More treatments are highly recommended. Combining this with a healthy diet and drinking lots of water and doing exercise can prolong the results. This isn’t suitable for someone with a poor diet, since the body will simply just store fat back in the areas where it was broken down.
Laser / IPL hair removal
Laser or IPL hair removal is highly effective at permanent hair reduction for most people.
The technology works by light hitting the hair follicles and destroying the blood flow to that follicle, thus killing it. It then continues to push out naturally over 2-3 weeks before falling out for good.
As the hair cycle is around 6 weeks, patients must wait 6 weeks between sessions and can only shave during treatments (no waxing / plucking etc as this removes the hair follicle we want to target). 6 sessions are recommended for women and 8 for men.
Patients can expect around an 90% reduction overall, although life circumstances / hormonal changes can stimulate more hair removal in the future. You can expect to perhaps have a top up once or twice a year. Not having to thinking about shaving and having smooth legs really is a game changer.
Unfortunately, sufferers of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome are not good candidates for this treatment, since the hormone fluctuations and imbalance stimulates hair growth, so results are usually poor. Every person is of course different though.
There is a myth that Laser is better than IPL. Perhaps with older systems this may have been the case. However, modern day technology means IPL has much more focussed output, targeting the hair follicle whilst protecting the surrounding skin. Here is one example of such a system which has amazing feedback from clients who have been treated with this machine http://laserluxuk.com/mediice3.php
Laser Tattoo Removal
Many people regret tattoos they have had done when younger, when intoxicated or when under the spell of love ????. Modern day laser tattoo removal means it is possible to remove them with the skin going back to normal.
Most common tattoos to be removed are ex’s names and wedding rings!
The laser light hits the ink particles within the skin and breaks it up in to smaller pieces so the body’s natural waste system can then take it away. The lymphatic system takes it away and it will pass in urine, sweat and stool. Patients will notice the face around 2-3 weeks after the treatment.
The results will vary between patients since there are so many factors involved such as tattoo ages, tattoo colours, the patient’s metabolism and the type of ink used. In very rare cases, the treatment does nothing.
There are different laser types for treatment which are generally categorised in to Pico Lasers and Nd:Yag. Pico lasers claim to be able to remove green / yellow tattoos whereas Nd:Yag machines will struggle with these colours. Most clinics will have an Nd:Yag since these are priced averagely around £20K compared to Pico lasers which cost £100K upwards. In fact the Picosure laser costs in the region of around £250K! Black and red tattoos are the easiest to remove.
Only up to a certain size of tattoo can be treated within one session, due to the amount of ink going into the blood stream. Large tattoos will have to be broken in to separate sessions. Clients should also drink plenty of water to help flush the ink out of the body.
Tattoo removal treatments should be spaced at least six weeks apart if you are treating the same area of skin. Any less than this will not give your skin sufficient time to recover from the previous treatment. Lasering it again too quickly is likely to cause damage. Permanent makeup is a great way to save time in the morning and at night, as well as waking up beautiful. When done correctly by an expert like Suki Su, the results are so natural, nobody would ever know!
Eyebrows – permanent eyebrows can be achieve using 2 popular techniques: Microblading or Tattooing. The later is more permanent as it uses a similar technique to traditional tattooing. This does mean you are usually stuck with this decision and the ink can change colour over time. Microblading is popular right now as it uses a hand held decide to emulate hair strokes, making it much more natural looking and it then fades over time. If you grew up in the era when it was fashionable to over-pluck your eyebrows, or you have alopecia, then this is a great treatment.
Eyeliner – define your eyes and never worry about crying / swimming / sweating again – your eye makeup will stay put! This is available in a number of colours and can be as subtle as you like, or bolder if you prefer.
Lips – don’t be put off by cases of bad permanent lipliner you may have seen in the past. Techniques and pigment now means the liner can be blended right down in to the lip so there is no harsh line and a completely natural colour. It is a great way to make your lips look bigger without the need for filler.
When we say permanent, the results will obviously fade over time as the body breaks down the ink pigment, but remnants will remain which is why it is described as permanent rather than semi-permanent. Top ups are usually recommended at least once a year.
A Radiofrequency (RF) facelift is an aesthetic treatment almost as popular as Botox due to the great results in facial tightening and body remodelling, without needles or a scalpel. The procedure is renowned for it’s skin tightening, which leaves patients noticing a difference both before and weeks after the radiofrequency facelift.
The treatment uses a technology that heats layers of the skin stimulating the production of collagen by providing a great intensity of heat in the deeper layers of the skin. During a facelift using RF, the production of collagen and elastin is stimulated. In this way, you can “rearrange” the face that has lost smoothness, tightening wrinkled, parched and flaccid skin.
There is no downtime – the skin may look a little red after the treatment but this normally subsides after 20 minutes and makeup can be applied after.
Reduces wrinkles, lifts and tightening skins, plumps skin with collagen production.
Non-surgical body lift / fat loss
There are many different treatments for fat removal and body lifting, some of which is described in section 3. For the purposes of this article, I will list some popular treatments:
Cryolipolysis – is a non-invasive body contouring treatment used to reduce fat cell volume by freezing. This method involves controlled application of cooling within the temperature range of +5 to -11 °C for the non-invasive, localised reduction of fat deposits, for reshaping the contours of the body. The degree of exposure to cooling causes cell death of subcutaneous fat tissue, without apparent damage to the surrounding skin. The method has a low rate of complications and is deemed to be safe and effective for fat reduction by about 20% at certain body areas.
Liposonix – is a treatment that targets the mid-level layer of fat in larger, more general areas of the abdomen. The procedure takes about an hour, with no downtime. It uses thermal ultrasonic energy to destroy the fat and stimulate the collagen around the treated area to firm up skin. A hand-held applicator gently glides across the targetted area, moving in a pattern to achieve the desired post procedure shape. The applied ultrasonic heat penetrates deeper than cold, destroying the fat cells, thereby causing them to die over several weeks. The body eliminates the damaged fat cells through the lymphatic system, leaving a reduced fat layer at the treatment site. Results from this procedure can be seen over 2-4 months after the procedure, and multiple treatments may be performed if needed.
Potential candidates for this treatment must have good skin tone and a doctor must be able to pinch at least 1 inch of tissue. It is approved for waist circumference reduction, where a typical patient will lose about 1 dress size after the first treatment.
Some people report mild soreness or bruising after this procedure. With results showing 2-4 months later, good planning is recommended for those who are considering Liposonix for a special event, such as a wedding.
Laser light treatments (such as SculpSure)… light-based technology treatment to permanently destroy undesirable fat cells in the body. It works to heat up fat cells in 25-minute treatment sessions. The increase in heat to the cells causes it to rupture, thus destroying the fat cells. This treatment works deeper and beyond the targeted fat-cell area to ensure a natural and more aesthetically pleasing appearance post-treatment.
All treatments claim to have similar results and it is down to the individual to decide what is best for them. Groupon or Wowcher are a good place to try them out.
This is quickly becoming a popular treatment for hair loss for both men and women.
Given how expensive a hair transplant is, tattooing the illusion of hair follicles on the scalp is a great way to get back your confidence.
It is a long process, taking hours spending on how large an area needs treating.
You can expect to spend anywhere from £300 for scar coverage, to £4000 for a full head, for several sessions to achieve the desired result. Most clients require a top up very 4-6 years priced at about £250-400 an hour depending on where you have it done. Check out www.scalp-micropigmentation.co.uk/ for reasonably priced services in Hertfordshire and North London.
The cost of scalp micro pigmentation treatment compares extremely well versus traditional solutions such as hair transplant surgery and a hair system.
