There are some trends (like skinny jeans) that may look great on some people but are certainly not for everyone.

On the other hand, there are some beauty trends that are appropriate for everyone, no matter their age, looks, or style. The growing interest in lip blushing and lip neutralisation are among them, and for good reason. These procedures offer a subtle, natural result that gently enhances our features.

The “woke up like this” movement is popular for one main reason: it showcases a natural look. Granted, achieving this natural look may require a little work, but ultimately, it’s well worth the effort.

We’re taking a closer look at lip blushing and lip neutralisation, and what you can expect from these procedures.

What is Lip Blushing?

Pigments are deposited into the lips using small needles during a lip blushing procedure to enhance their colour and shape.

Without a doubt, we all want beautiful lips. For those of us born with a less-than-perfect pout, constantly wearing makeup may get tedious. However, with the ever-evolving lip tattooing techniques available, we can achieve the result we want in just a few hours.

Lip blushing is commonly performed to give the appearance of fuller lips with a subtle tint. Although it can also be used alone to subtly shape the mouth and add a pop of colour.

Who Would Benefit From Lip Blushing?

There is no single standard of beauty, and what looks amazing on one face may look out of place on another. Therefore, the point of lip blushing is to enhance what you already have and to make minor corrections where needed.

Lip blushing is ideal for you if:

  • Your lips appear pale
  • You want fuller-looking lips
  • You would prefer a more defined lip border
  • You would like a particular shade of colour on your lips
  • You want to correct the asymmetry of your lips
  • You have scars or pigmentation on your lips that you would like to hide

It’s no secret that age, illness, and lifestyle choices affect our facial features, but thankfully it doesn’t have to be permanent.

Lip Blushing FAQs

If you’re interested in exploring this exciting procedure, then let’s consider how it works and what you can expect.

Is lip blushing painful?

Most clinics will apply a topical numbing agent to the lip area which helps to dull the pain. However, it’s worth noting that some people with a lower pain threshold may experience discomfort as the mouth area is incredibly sensitive.

Are there any side effects to look out for?

As with similar procedures, you can expect some pain, redness and swelling in the area after treatment. Additionally, the risk of infection is higher as your treatment site is exposed to food, saliva, and mouth bacteria, so it’s essential to maintain a strict hygiene routine in the days following. If you suffer from cold sores, antiviral medication is needed prior to the procedure and a few days after.

What happens during a lip blushing procedure?

After agreeing on the tone and shape that you want to achieve, I will prepare the pigment, numb the area, and mark up your face. The process of injecting the pigment into your lips is much the same as tattooing and I will make several passes over the area for an even and natural finish.

How long does the procedure take?

This depends very much on what you want, but it can take anywhere from 1 – 3 hours.

How long does it last?

A lip blush is considered semi-permanent. To maintain your results, you’ll have to repeat this procedure every few years. The frequency of your appointments will depend on your lifestyle; for example, whether or not you smoke, your facial skin routine, and how much time you spend in the sun.

Caring for your lips after treatment.

You may find that your lips will be swollen and sensitive for a few days, which is entirely normal. To care for the skin, stay out of the sun and treat any discomfort with a cold compress. Avoid picking at the scabs as they heal. I will advise you on the aftercare ointment that I provide.

It’s well worth talking to a qualified and experienced specialist who will be able to answer your questions and guide you through the procedure.

What is Lip Neutralisation?

What about darker-skinned people who would like lighter or more even-coloured lips?

Over time, some women of African or Asian/Indian descent may find that their lips become darker through weather conditions, hyperpigmentation, or underlying medical issues

When this occurs, lip lightening is an effective way to lighten the skin tone and neutralise the pigmentation. Generally, the procedure takes a few sessions to correct the undertone and then create layers of pigment beneath the skin to achieve an overall lighter tone.

Patients may experience some discomfort, or perhaps some flaking and discolouration after treatment. However, these pass quickly and the result is a long-lasting colour that is both lighter and more even. The procedure is suitable for both men and women and is an undetectable way to correct dark lip colour issues.
